Miklashevich confident about people's active participation in referendum

I am sure that Belarusian citizens will take an active part in the referendum on the updated Constitution, Chairman of the Constitutional Court and the Constitutional Commission Piotr Miklashevich told journalists. On 9 February he met with the staff of Belarusian State Economic University to explain the amendments and additions to the Constitution, BelTA has learned.

“The Constitution is a social contract between the government and the people about the type of social and political system, about the relationship between the individual, the society and the state. It is important that the new fundamental law is not just a well-written text, but a truly people's Constitution. Belarusians contributed their views on the Constitution draft, discussed the proposed amendments and now it is time to make a decision on the new Constitution at a referendum,” Piotr Miklashevich said.

“Citizens of our country had a real opportunity to submit proposals to the Constitutional Commission during the public discussion; many dialogue platforms to discuss the new Constitution draft were held even in the run-up to the Belarusian People's Congress. The Belarusian People's Congress heard the public request for a constitutional reform and took a decision to set up a Constitutional Commission that will update the text of the Constitution. We see that people are actively involved in the work on the new Constitution. I am sure that our citizens will fulfill their civic duty and take an active part in the referendum on the updated Constitution,” Piotr Miklashevich said.
